Flatrock Heritage Foundation

Very interesting public art project. A non-profit neighborhood association got in touch with me to come up with some ideas to enhance the supports as a gateway to their neighborhood. They actually went out and got a grant, as well as matching funds from the Zoo, whose entrance is right down the street.  The biggest problem was with CSX railroad, because this is the first time they have ever let anyone paint on their property in 23 states– ever! All it took was a little bitty 21 page contract. Such fun.

The association got all kinds of volunteers to help, not only with painting, but with trash pick-up (over 100 bags!), police support (to block lanes – it’s a state highway!), water supply for pressure washing, Drug Court personnel to help with labor, etc. The whole painting project took right at a month, using silicate paint and a 45’ lift.

hello
Here is a shot of all three supports for the railroad overpass. Before any clean up. Lots of overgrowth, vines, homeless camps, garbage, graffiti, etc.
Close-up of the center column, showing what we had to work with.
hello
Turned out pretty cool, huh? Some of the police, who were there every day, actually thought that the columns had indentions. They just never noticed them before.
Flatrock is the name of the neighborhood. Thought I’d give them their due. Quick story: one of the Hyacinth Macaws actually got loose one day. We teased that he came over to visit his buddy. Good thing the clouded leopard didn’t do the same thing.
All of the animals are ones from the zoo that can actually climb. Got an actual list from one of the directors. Had to be accurate, huh?
